Why Meta wants to fill Facebook and Instagram with AI fake profiles? 🤖

Social networks could soon welcome millions of new "users." These entities, designed by artificial intelligence, will interact with human profiles, disrupting online social dynamics.

Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, is currently developing virtual characters capable of generating content and interacting with users. These profiles, equipped with biographies and photos, will mimic real accounts to enrich interactions on the platforms. The goal is to make the networks more captivating and entertaining.

The AI Studio tool, launched in July 2023, already allows the creation of these characters. Although currently limited to the United States, it has already generated hundreds of thousands of profiles. These AI characters will be able to share posts, respond to comments, and even participate in video calls. Their gradual integration aims to make them coexist with human users.

However, this innovation raises concerns. Experts fear that these profiles could be used to spread misinformation or manipulate opinions. The line between reality and virtuality could become blurred. Meta assures that these characters will be clearly identified as AI-generated. Yet, their ability to mimic human behavior could deceive some users, especially in sensitive contexts like political or social debates.

Another concern is the quality of content. A proliferation of AI-generated posts could saturate the platforms, reducing the visibility of authentic content.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy by Meta to boost engagement on its networks. Faced with increased competition, the company is betting on AI to retain its users and maintain its dominant position.

While these virtual characters offer new possibilities, their massive deployment could profoundly transform social networks. Users will have to adapt to an environment where interactions are no longer exclusively human.

The benefits of AI profiles on social networks

Despite the previously mentioned concerns, these virtual characters can, on the other hand, offer significant advantages. By generating content autonomously, they could enrich the platforms with varied and relevant posts. This could stimulate interactions and keep users engaged longer.

They could also serve as virtual assistants, answering users' questions or guiding them in their navigation. For example, an AI character could intervene in comments to correct misinformation or calm heated debates.

Finally, these entities could help moderate the platforms by identifying and reporting inappropriate content. Their ability to quickly analyze interactions could enhance the safety and quality of online exchanges.
