๐Ÿ’€ Unexpected toxic substances discovered in the air in the United States

In the plains of Oklahoma, United States, unexpected toxic substances have been detected in the air. Researchers have identified medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) for the first time.

MCCPs could come from biosolid fertilizers. These fertilizers, derived from wastewater treatment, are often spread on farmland, potentially releasing toxic compounds into the atmosphere.

The regulation of short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) may have led to an increase in MCCPs. Researchers emphasize the importance of understanding the environmental impact of these pollutants, similar to PFAS, known as 'forever chemicals'.

MCCPs are chemical compounds used in various industries for their lubricating and flame-retardant properties. They are particularly resistant to degradation, allowing them to persist in the environment for long periods.

These substances can accumulate in living organisms, posing risks to human and animal health. Their presence in the air, as detected in Oklahoma, raises questions about their dispersion and impact.

MCCPs are currently under study for possible regulation under the Stockholm Convention. This initiative aims to protect human health and the environment from persistent organic pollutants.
