Selecting embryos to have more intelligent children is now possible. The American company Heliospect Genomics offers to rank embryos according to their genome, based notably on IQ criteria. A process that raises numerous questions.
By analyzing embryos derived from in vitro fertilization (IVF), Heliospect uses algorithms to determine future genetic traits. The company then offers parents the opportunity to choose their preferred embryo. These analyses are not limited to intelligence. Other traits, such as susceptibility to developing certain diseases or even gender, can also be considered. Heliospect markets its services to a privileged clientele.
Heliospect's predictive technologies are based on data from the UK Biobank. However, this practice is far from being widely accepted. In the UK, for instance, selecting embryos for non-medical reasons is prohibited. Ethical questions are at the heart of the debate. Some experts believe that this service could exacerbate inequalities by creating a form of "genetic perfection" accessible only to the wealthy.
Furthermore, Heliospect claims to comply with the laws in countries where it operates, particularly in the United States, where regulations are less stringent than in Europe. However, the social implications of this technology worry many scientists.
This approach could lead to discrimination against those who do not meet the criteria of perfection established by this technology. A reflection is needed on the limits of applying genetics to procreation.
What is genomic prediction?
Genomic prediction is a method that uses the analysis of genetic data to estimate the likely characteristics or traits of an individual. This data generally comes from DNA sequencing and allows for predicting elements such as the risk of diseases, cognitive abilities, or even physical traits.
This process relies on algorithms that analyze thousands of genetic variants. Scientists use databases like the UK Biobank to refine these predictions and assess complex traits over the long term.
