☄️ Perseid meteor shower: the must-see celestial event

Every summer, Earth offers a natural celestial spectacle: the Perseid meteor shower. This event occurs when our planet passes through a vast cloud of dust left by comet Swift-Tuttle during its orbits around the Sun. These particles, sometimes centuries old, travel through space until they intersect our path, transforming the night sky into a canvas dotted with fleeting luminous streaks.


In 2025, the event will be particularly anticipated on the night of August 12-13. This is when Earth will plunge into the densest region of the meteor stream, promising the highest number of visible shooting stars. This peak occurs roughly at the same time each year, but viewing conditions vary greatly depending on weather, light pollution, and the Moon's phase.

The Perseids take their name from the constellation Perseus, which contains the "radiant," the point in the sky from which the meteors appear to originate. In reality, these luminous trails have nothing to do with stars. They are caused by tiny fragments, sometimes smaller than a grain of sand, entering Earth's atmosphere at a staggering speed of nearly 37 miles per second (60 km/s). Friction with the air heats them to thousands of degrees, vaporizing them almost instantly and producing this brief but intense light.


However, this year, a major obstacle may reduce the number of visible meteors: the Moon. Nearly full just three days after its brightest apogee on August 9, it will remain very bright, and its glow will obscure the faintest shooting stars. This phenomenon is well known to amateur astronomers: even during an intense peak, an overly illuminated sky makes meteor hunting more difficult, especially for those hoping to observe long trails.

To maximize your chances, experts recommend getting away from cities to avoid light pollution, choosing a location with a clear horizon, and, if possible, blocking the Moon behind a natural obstacle or structure. This will preserve your night vision and help spot the brightest meteors. A simple reclining chair or blanket on the ground, a sweater for the cool night air, and a bit of patience are the ingredients for a successful observation.

The best time for viewing is usually after midnight, when the constellation Perseus rises higher in the sky. At this hour, the radiant is better positioned, increasing the likelihood of seeing meteors in all directions. Even though this year's lunar brightness will reduce the number of visible phenomena, you can still expect to observe several dozen beautiful shooting stars per hour under good conditions.

The Perseids are not just an aesthetic event: each observed meteor is a fragment of the past, originating from debris left by Swift-Tuttle during its previous passes, the last in 1992 and the next expected in 2126. This celestial ballet thus connects generations and reminds us that our planet travels through a perpetually moving cosmic environment.


The phenomenon has been known since antiquity. Chinese records mention spectacular meteor showers as early as the 4th century, and medieval European astronomers often saw them as religious or political signs. Today, the Perseids have become a popular event, followed by millions worldwide, often accompanied by the tradition of "making a wish" on each shooting star spotted.

Even if dimmed by the Moon's brightness, the 2025 Perseids will retain their power to amaze. For it's not just the number of shooting stars that matters, but also the experience: a summer sky, the anticipation of a luminous streak, and that fleeting sensation of belonging to the vastness of the cosmos. Perhaps it's in this simplicity that the true magic of the spectacle lies.

So whether you're an enthusiast or just a nighttime stroller, the night of August 12-13 will be an opportunity to look up and let yourself be surprised. Meteors are unpredictable, but it's precisely this element of chance that makes each observation unique.
