How do cats manage to squeeze through such unlikely spaces?

Cats possess a unique talent. They seem to effortlessly slip through narrow spaces, defying our expectations. But what are the keys to this agility?


A major feature of their ability lies in their skeletal structure. Their flexible shoulder girdle gives them an impressive contortion capability. Unlike that of humans, this girdle is only attached by muscles, allowing exceptional freedom of movement.

Cats' clavicles, smaller and non-rigid, also contribute to their flexibility. According to feline medical experts, these anatomical peculiarities allow them to shrink their volume and pass through tiny openings. This adaptation is the result of evolution favoring hunting and escape.

Indeed, cats actively seek out confined spaces, especially in stressful situations. Small hideaways, like under a bed or inside a box, provide them with security and privacy. These behaviors are often associated with stressful circumstances, offering a welcome refuge.

Additionally, their whiskers play a key role. These sensitive hairs allow felines to precisely assess the size of an opening before entering it. By detecting air movements, they avoid environmental traps, thus limiting the risk of accidents.



Recent scientific studies confirm this unique ability. Research from 2024 revealed that cats can squeeze through spaces narrower than their chest. However, these studies reveal new information: cats have a very precise awareness of their own body size. This awareness allows them to make informed decisions when approaching small openings, determining in advance whether they are likely to fit through or not.

Cats' behaviors are actually a combination of instinct, perception, and anatomical adaptation. Their ability to squeeze into tight spaces is a major asset in the wild, both for hunting and for protection.

By offering hiding spots to our feline companions at home, we contribute to their well-being, reducing their stress. Small spaces then become refuges where they can rest peacefully.
